Summary of Platelet
Gel in Enhanced Tissue Viability Seminar
The following points
summarise the seminar:
Autologous platelet gel
(APG) therapy is big in the US, Australasia and
its use is growing in Europe.
Extensive clinical experience
of treating chronic wounds with platelet gel was
discussed by Dr Peter Minartz, a leading European
Diabetologist from Herz- und Diabeteszentrum, Bad
Oeynhausen. He outlined:
Wound Healing
Factors
The benefits
of Autologous Growth Factors over Recombinant
Growth Factors
Platelet
Gel Treatment of 23 cases with chronic non-healing
diabetic wounds resulted in 9 wounds healing
completely and 13 showing significant improvement
during the observation period (124 Days).
No adverse events were seen.
Wound Healing
Factors
A group of patients how will
benefit from platelet gel therapy were identified
Chronic
wounds
Diabetic
foot syndrome
neuropathic
ulcers*
neuroangiopathic
ulcers**
angiopathic
ulcers** (* no healing after total offloading)
(** no critical limb ischemia)
Acute wounds
of the diabetic foot syndrome inoperative
by necessary operations*** (***amputations,
bone resections or plastic surgical interventions
to prevent p.o. wound healing disorders)
Mr T Gooris, a clinical perfusionist
based in OLV Ziekenhuis, Aalst in Belgium summarised
his 4 years of experience with autologous platelet
gel:
Its wound
healing factors
When to
apply APG
How long
to use it for
Its ability
to reduce patient pain and discomfort
APG's role
in many other disciplines
A clinical demonstration
was given of how to make platelet gel as well as
showing its workability.
We discussed how to introduce
APG's to the UK and focused on bringing it to individual
units. The aspects considered were funding, equipment,
workforce and protocols, all areas that have been
extensively researched by London Perfusion Science.
London Perfusion Science
currently lead the UK as experts in this field and
have successfully introduced this technology to
Cardiac, Spinal and Orthopedic surgeries.
