London Perfusion Science - Background
Cardiac surgical workload can vary on a day-to-day basis (ITU bed's, Staff shortages, etc.). Perfusion as a speciality is different in terms of role and workforce to any other discipline within the NHS. In the past it has been difficult to integrate our principle role of Extracorporeal support into other disciplines. London Perfusion Science continually strives to make sure this is not the case and we have successfully expanded into various other disciplines.

London Perfusion Science was formed in 2001 and has worked in nine of the London hospitals. Our autologous therapies department (Cell Salvage, Platelet Gels, etc.) ensures that we are pushing the boundaries of our speciality. We run hospital specific Perfusion departments from the workforce and equipment to the research and training.

London Perfusion Science is not an agency, we meticulously recruit and employ our own Perfusionists. We do not recruit our perfusionists from London hospitals as this could be considered a conflict of interests. Our Perfusionists have to go through a rigorous recruitment process as all members are given some level of ownership of the company. This ownership is key to maintaining the high standard of service the company attains.

Achieving high performance levels is not just driven from within the company. Because we are independent we have had to source replacements for NHS bodies such as the NHS Litigation Authority with external organisations like the Medical Defence Union.

The company strives to build a strong, extended relationship with contracted hospitals. We do this by ensuring our individual pricing structures compete with budgets set aside for an NHS Perfusion department and that we make ourselves indispensable in both the clinical and non-clinical aspects of the Cardiothoracic centre.

We give hospitals the opportunity to specify exactly what they want from a perfusion department; we provide the service requested along with detailed progress reports. The only input necessary from the Cardiothoracic centre is to update its perfusion requirements.

The company's references include Consultant Surgeons, Consultant Anaesthetists, Professors, Senior Managers (Clinical and Financial) and Perfusion Managers.
